Q: GMAP 1 vs GMAP 2? A: GMAP 1 is optimized for sea search and GMAP 2 is optimized for ground mapping. Both have variable gain. Only GMAP 1 has clutter reduction (1 and 2).
Q: SART detection? A: SART is a radar transponder that puts out a line of white dots on the return from 7-8 nms in a 10 nm scale. Within 1-5 nms, the dots fan out, and the fan increases as you get closure.
Q: Clutter reduction (CR) description? A: clutter reduction is available in GMAP 1 (CR 1 high sea states, CR 2 for medium sea states) and WX radar – CR is ground clutter reduction (GCR) which times out after 20 secs. It is only available up to 50 nms. CR is not available in WX – RCT or GMAP 2.
Q: Sea states according to the C4ISR Ops Manual? A: Low: 0-1′, 0-6 kts. Medium: 2′, 7-10 kts (CR 2). High: 3+’, 11+ kts (CR 1).
Q: Description of turbulence detection (TRB)? A: Available in WX modes (WX and WX/RCT) available up to 50 nms. Provides white in areas of potential hazardous turbulence.
Q: Function of target alert (TGT)? A: Available in WX and WX RCT. Creates a flashing yellow block with a black TGT alert on the status/faults display when there is a red level or greater +/- 7.5° dead-ahead and 50 nms beyond.
Q: Scan Angle in SECT? A: This toggles between the full azimuth scan angel of 120° (12 sweeps/min.) and 60°.
Q: Gain description? A: Calibrated – knob pushed. Variable – knob pulled. Calibrated gain is available in all modes. Variable is available in GMAP 1, 2 and WX modes. It is disabled in WX/RCT and when the TGT function is selected in WX mode.
Q: Tilt description? A: Variable – knob pushed. Auto – knob pulled. Variable is available in all modes. Auto is only available in WX modes (courseware only – not mentioned in the FM. Auto tilts according to altitude and range setting).
Q: Operation in dual control mode? A: Each pilot’s settings are utilized alternatively and the picture is updated on alternating sweeps.
Q: Description of the test pattern? A: Four colors followed by red and green vertical stripes then a blue “react” pattern followed by a noise pattern with a “tst” and a flashing “tgt” in the status alert.
Q: Description of Roll Offset Compensation (ROC)? A: Allows pilot to add 2° left or right offset to the roll stabilization. To correct, make sure you are in level flight over level terrain. Have one controller off and the other in WX mode. Press TRB and SECT at the same time and use the gain knob to adjust the offset. Press TRB and SECT again to get out. Tilt and range may need to be adjusted to get a better representation.
Q: Wind effect (C4ISR Ops Manual)? A: With winds greater than 10 kts., sea clutter precludes good target detection. Search cross wind or downwind to improve the radar return.
Q: Tilt effects (C4ISR Ops Manual)? A: Best results are obtained when performing surveillance over water at the lowest possible altitude.
Q: Range and radar horizon (C4ISR Ops Manual)? A: A 0′ target… 250′ – 20 nms. 500′ – 27 nms. 1000′ – 39 nms. Distance grows as the target gets higher from the sea.
