Q: Function of SAS-1? A: Independent “analog” system provides inputs to the SAS servos. Only monitored for faults by DAFCC.
Q: Function of the DAFCC? A: Digital SAS-2 to the SAS servos and autopilot functions through the trim units. SAS 2 is built into the DAFCC system and is automatically shutdown when faults are detected. As such, SAS 2 requires computer power to be turned on.
Q: Function of the pilot assist servos? A: SAS servos (all axes), trim servos (roll and pitch – hydraulic, yaw and coll – electrical), Boost Assist Servos (pitch, yaw and collective).
Q: Function of the SAS servos? A: Rapid stabilization. 10% authority when both are on. 5% when only one is operating and gain is doubled.
Q: Function of the trim servos? A: Provided force gradient and controls the helicopter interface for the autopilot.
Q: Boost servo function? A: “Power steering”.
Q: SAS 1 and 2 axes? A: SAS 1 – pitch, roll, yaw. SAS 2 – pitch, roll, yaw and collective.
Q: Description of hover aug/gust alleviation? A: SAS 2 inner loop function through the pitch and roll, SAS servos at low airspeeds or in a hover.
Q: Description of the trim system? A: Two hydraulic servos (pitch and roll), two electrical servos or motors (collective and yaw). Force gradient for control feedback and autopilot interface to drive the flight controls for the “modes” (e.g., airspeed hold… auto approach… etc.).
Q: Trim control authority? A: Full control authority, limited to 10%/second.
Q: Function of the trim button? A: Operates both the electrical and hydraulic servos. Needs computer power to operate.
Q: Buttons necessary for autopilot activation? A: Needs computer power on, SAS1 OR SAS2, and trim on to activate autopilot. You need SAS 2 for collective outer loop functions – all the buttons on the second row of the AFCS control panel (e.g. altitude holds, auto approach/departure, crew hover).
Q: Buttons necessary for roll coupler activation? A: For engagement you need airspeed greater than 60 KIAS, SAS1 and/or SAS2, trim, auto pilot and both EGIs operational.
Q: Fail advisory for roll coupler? A: Provided when steering signals exceed 24° AOB or 3.6°/second. You’ll get a Master Caution and a fail advisory on the lower console.
Q: Stab functions (SCALP)? A: Streamlines (eliminates nose up in a hover), collective coupling (minimizes pitch excursions), angle of incidence (improves A/S stability), lateral sideslip, pitch rate feedback (adjusts for turbulence and G’s).
Q: Stab auto mode “shutdown” threshold between the two actuators? A: Below 30 KIAS a difference of 10°. This proportionally decreases to 4° for airspeeds above 150 KIAS.
