Purpose Under Pressure
A clear sense of purpose strengthens resilience by helping to interpret stress and adversity within the context of meaningful work.
One of the resilience domains within the HART framework is Vision—a sense of purpose and meaning – what I like to call our “why.”
Stress often accompanies meaningful work. If the mission matters, the responsibility will naturally carry weight.
Purpose helps people endure difficult circumstances because it provides context for the work. When individuals understand why their efforts matter, they can tolerate greater stress.
But there is also a risk when people identify too strongly with their profession. If identity is tied exclusively to a job, retirement or injury can create a sudden loss of direction.
Resilient professionals develop a broader sense of purpose.
For me, writing and building the Spiral Up Project has become part of that broader mission. Sharing lessons with younger professionals, supporting the development of our youth, and contributing to future generations of rescuers and other service providers gives meaning that extends beyond a single career.
It also allows me to honor the friends I have lost in this profession. Closing the gap between who I am and who I can become is something every one of them would have enthusiastically supported.
Purpose helps place difficult experiences in perspective.
