Credit to Advanced Helicopter Rescue School: A Small School with a Big Impact
As we approach peak hurricane season, followed closely by winter heavy-weather operations, I revisited the Advanced Hoisting posts and added the six-minute video below to the series.
The video introduces many of the techniques addressed in the posts. Just as importantly, it recognizes three decades of effort by the US Coast Guard’s Advanced Helicopter Rescue School (AHRS) staff who have worked tirelessly to test, refine, and share the helicopter rescue tactics, techniques, and procedures discussed in the Advanced Hoisting series.

For a school with a small staff and limited training capacity, AHRS has had a remarkable impact on the Coast Guard helicopter rescue community.
In recent years, that influence has extended to other US military services as well as international partners. AHRS trains members of the Army’s 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, U.S. Air Force Pararescue and helicopter squadrons, and select NATO allies—helping these elite operators refine their personnel recovery and self-rescue skills in demanding maritime rescue environments.
