Common Errors:

Excessive left yaw during power application.
Overcontrolling left pedal, resulting in pilot-induced oscillations.
Stabilizing at 20’, then stalling descent at 10’ and becoming unstable again.
Touching down with one wheel and then climbing back into a hover, increasing risk of dynamic rollover.

Teaching Techniques:

Reinforce proper hover scan habits: out, over, down. A balanced scan improves both precision (close cues) and stability (far cues).
Lead power with left pedal and maintain strong, balanced pedal pressure on both pedals to prevent tail wag.
Teach students to anticipate downward collective pressure being necessary during landing. Avoid stopping at 10’; maintain a steady descent from 20’ to the deck.
Once a main wheel touches down, smoothly lower the collective while adjusting cyclic to maintain level attitude and minimize drift.
