Boost Servo Off Methods

Common Errors:

  • Excessive left yaw during power application.
  • Overcontrolling left pedal, resulting in pilot-induced oscillations.
  • Stabilizing at 20’, then stalling descent at 10’ and becoming unstable again.
  • Touching down with one wheel and then climbing back into a hover, increasing risk of dynamic rollover.

Teaching Techniques:

  • Reinforce proper hover scan habits: out, over, down. A balanced scan improves both precision (close cues) and stability (far cues).
  • Lead power with left pedal and maintain strong, balanced pedal pressure on both pedals to prevent tail wag.
  • Teach students to anticipate downward collective pressure being necessary during landing. Avoid stopping at 10’; maintain a steady descent from 20’ to the deck.
  • Once a main wheel touches down, smoothly lower the collective while adjusting cyclic to maintain level attitude and minimize drift.
